Itinerari (V.O)

Diving in the Solomon Islands

Diving is done mothership fashion with divers shuttled to the dive site in one of the two specially designed aluminum skiffs (called “tinnies”). Once in the water, the divers are tracked by their bubbles and can be picked up by the tinnie crew and shuttled back to the ship almost the minute they reach the surface. This eliminates long swims, current fighting and sitting in the hot sun while waiting for other divers to surface.

The dive schedule is established by the managers, but this is flexible to accommodate the desires of all the passengers. An evening briefing usually outlines the plans for the next days diving, and passengers comments and input are welcomed. The ship does not follow a specific itinerary during the course of a cruise, and weather and diving conditions, and the preferences of the passengers, will all affect the dive sites chosen and the length of stay in any given locale.

In general, on a 10 day or longer cruise the ship will visit the Florida Islands, Russell Islands, Marovo Lagoon and Mborukua Island (also known as Mary Island). Seven day trips generally operate in the Floridas, Russells and Mborukua.

Most diving need not be deep as the reefs start close to the surface. Often the reefs drop off gradually allowing you to explore extensively at relatively shallow depths. You will find walls, however, often in close conjunction to a reef, making it excellent for computer assisted diving.

Divers in the Solomons are usually comfortable in a Lycra or at most an eighth inch ( 2- 3mm ) wetsuit. Water temperature will be in the 82oF to 85oF (28o C - 30o C) range, but after multiple dives per day you may find that you need some thermal protection.

Bring both macro and wide-angle lens for your cameras if you are into underwater photography.

Power throughout the ship is 240 V 50 cycle, using Australia style 3-prong outlets. There are also plenty of American style 110 V 60 cycle outlets for charging cameras, strobes, dive lights, etc. These outlets are only for charging purposes so if you intend to use hairdryers, shavers, etc. you will need to bring adapters.

what is the difference in the different length trips?

Solomon Islands consists of hundreds of islands and groups of islands.
There are 3 main island groups that we dive: Florida Islands, Russell Islands, and Marovo Lagoon in the New Georgia Group. Each of these island groups consists of dozens of islands and a vast array of dive sites. We also dive an isolated island known as Mary Island.

Our 7 night trips will generally dive Florida Islands, Russell Islands and Mary Island, while 14 night and longer trips will also travel to Marovo Lagoon.

10 night trips may or may not go to Marovo depending on conditions. We do not have set itineraries. There are so many dive sites in each area that we are able to go where the best diving is at any given time, and also cater to the type of diving that the guests on board prefer.

In all cases rest assured that we will do our utmost to offer you the best diving available at the time.

Check-in and Check-out

Boarding time on the first day is normally around 4 - 5 PM. Disembarkation is around 8 AM on the last day.

All of our departures are designed to work with the incoming and outgoing flights so in general overnights are not required. We will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the vessel, or if your flight is earlier than the boarding time to a nearby hotel where you can relax. On the last day you generally have a few hours to look around town before we transfer you back to the airport.

Of course not all flights from all ports of entry arrive and depart on our charter dates so depending on when you choose to fly overnights may be required.

INFORMAZIONI UTILI

Isole Salomone

Best time for diving
April - June & September - November, you can dive year round, cyclones rarely hit the Solomon Islands. Usually January to March it tends to rain the most, however, the rain has little impact on diving. Between July and August the sea is rougher than the rest of the year, but you can still dive.

The average visibility is around 15 - 30 meters, though at times you can get above 30 meters. Currents are mild, and the surface conditions are nearly always calm.

About temperatures
Air : winter months are between 23°C - 28°C, summer months are between 24°C - 29°C.
Sea : range between 28°C - 30°C all year, with the "cooler" time of year from June to August(28°C - 29°C).

Wetsuit Recommendation
3mm wetsuit is recommended year round. Please keep in mind most of the liveabaords will provide 4 - 5 dives in the Solomon Islands, so some thermal protection is needed.

Diver requirement
Suitable for all levels. You can find out more informations about diving in the Solomon Islands here : Solomon Islands

Embarkation / Disembarkation
Most embarkation and disembarkation are in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands. Guests can fly to Honiara International Airport (HIR). From most countries flying via Brisbane(BNE), Australia is the best option although Air Niugini do have options between Singapore and Honiara via Port Moresby(POM).

For trips which start or end in Munda (MUA) there are daily flights operated by Solomons Airlines from / to Honiara.

Visa Requirements
Citizens of the US, most British Commonwealth and European Union countries do not need a visa. If you have a valid passport (minimum 6 months validity from planned date of entry) and a return or onward ticket, you can acquire a visitor’s visa valid for three months on arrival. Please refer to Visa Requirements for details.

For guests who do need visa, we are happy to provide assistance with Solomon Islands visa applications with at least 8 weeks notice and a handling fee will be charged for this service in addition to the cost of the visa, regardless of the outcome of the application.

Guests travelling via Australia may need to apply for a transit or visitor’s visa before travelling, if the time between connecting flights is more than 8 hours, or if they wish to leave the airport during their transit period. To check which visa you may need, please refer to the visa section of Australian Immigration - please note that Australian visa applications can take up to 14 days to process.

Vaccinations
Vaccination against measles is required for entry into the Solomon Islands. All passengers entering the Solomon Islands are required to complete a health declaration form regarding immunisation against/exposure to measles. The forms will be made available at check-in counters and on board your flight. Proof of vaccination is no longer required on entry though so as long as you can tick that you are vaccinated for measles. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for traveller arriving from at risk countries in Africa and the Americas.

Money Matters
The local currency is the Solomon Islands Dollar (SBD). All liveaboards accept payment in USD. Exchange services are available, including at Honiara International Airport. Larger hotels, resorts, shops and restaurants may accept Visa and Master Card for which a charge will likely be levied, but not always so always check first.

Drones
Please refer to Drone Laws in the Solomon Islands for more information.

Extending your holiday
We offer a range of hotels/resorts, land-based diving packages, and excursions that can be arranged before or after your liveaboard holiday. Just ask us if you need such service.
